‘As someone who grew up in a home where there were few books, libraries were very important to me. Without free access to books of all kinds my life would have been very different. So, when I was asked to produce 12 designs for library cards I was delighted. The brief was wonderfully open.

I tried to group the cards into 4 sets of three. The first 6 feature books, then I moved on to owls as the next cards were inspired by on Harry Potter Book Night, but more importantly owls are seen to be wise. You will notice that all the owls have keys, this is because a library card is your 'key' to all of the books held by the public libraries.

The last three designs revolved around the work I am doing with Robert MacFarlane. In conversations we had talked about goldfinches, kingfisher is one of the lost words from the Oxford Junior Dictionary and Robert and I are doing a book together about these. The last was on request of Robert's daughter, who loves bright jays. The acorn, again one of the lost words.’
