Schools Library Service

Schools Library Service bookshelf - with books on.The service supports subscribing schools by providing high quality loan materials and professional advice and support to a very high standard. SLS staff can provide impartial advice on book selection, school libraries and book related activities.

Service Aims

  •   ● Support the National Curriculum & Literacy Strategy
  •   ● Encourage literacy & reading for enjoyment
  •   ● Enhance teaching and learning
  •   ● Offer practical advice and support on library related issues

Summary of Services available

  ● Project loans: Boxes of up to 25 books to support topic work, the Literacy Strategy and reading for pleasure.

 ● DVD / Video Loan Service: Curriculum related items for loan, delivered to and collected from schools on a weekly basis, available on a separate subscription.

 

  ● Advice and support: Professional and impartial advice on school libraries, their layout, stock and management. Practical help to organise stock.

  ● Book Ordering: showroom of recommended titles for primary schools, plus ordering service. Most items can be ordered at 15% discount, with free servicing and plastic jackets at a discounted rate.

  ● INSET: Occasional training courses, for both secondary and primary schools.

  ● Visits to schools: Regular visits to subscribing LEA primary schools offering practical support and advice.

  ● Secondary schools: Termly meetings and training for school librarians.

  ● Book weeks: Advice on authors & illustrators to visit, posters, special book loans, and books supplied on sale or return basis to support events.

 

Special events

  •   ● Reading is Fundamental: for those schools in the project area, the SLS co-ordinates and supports class visits to the public library for children to choose books to keep.

  •   ●
    Hounslow Junior Book Award and Hounslow Teen Read Award are run by the service to promote the enjoyment of reading and encourage reading groups in schools.

  •   ●
    Kick into Reading for primary schools: an annual event to promote reading, organised in partnership with Griffin Park Learning Zone at Brentford Football Club.

 

Subscriptions

 

The School Library Service is available on annual subscription to both LEA and independent schools, nurseries and playgroups in Hounslow. Enquiries are also welcomed from outside the borough.

 

Please note that the DVD / Video Loan Service is charged for by a separate subscription
