Smokey Lane Heston

Smokey Lane Heston In the 19th century, Heston was part of the Middlesex brick-making industry. Smoky Lane ran from New Heston Road to Sutton Lane and passed between the Heston brickfields. It got its name from the veils of smoke that drifted across the lane from the brick-kilns on either side.

The brickfields were owned by the Westbrook family and it was Mary Ann Westbrook who set up  the Westbrook Memorial Institute in New Heston Road almost opposite the start of Smoky Lane. When Smoky Lane was developed it was renamed Westbrook Road. After the Memorial Institute was demolished, houses were built there and the street was named Memorial Close
